The controversial Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will go into effect this December 18, 2017. What this means is that immediately on this day drivers will begin to receive citations if they do not comply to the regulations. However not until April 1, 2018 will inspectors begin to issue out of service orders to trucks that fail to fulfill the ELD regulations. Although the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance will continue to allow the ‘grandfathered’ Automatic Onboard Recording Device (AOBRD) to be accepted up until December 16, 2019. Out of service letters are being delayed for three months after the regulation goes into effect, in order to reduce the impact, it will have on the supply chain industry. This will give carriers and operators an opportunity to comply to the regulation. Read the full article on the ELD out of service delay by CDLife here.
