The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, FMCSA, recently published in the Federal Register that it is looking for public opinions towards the 2015 proposed rule which would reject the exemption requirement for drivers with diabetes. As an alternative the decision to grant diabetic drivers a one-year medical certificate would be based on medical examiners and physicians.
The deadline to submit public comments is September 25th. FMCSA stated that the information regarding a driver’s diabetes would be collected and analyzed by a treated physician. This information would include details about insulin use, monitoring of blood glucose, eye diseases and other signs that could produce potential complications. The prior process disqualified drivers and forwarded them to the agency to file for exemption which could take up to six months.
